Statement of Concensus

Following the New York Symposium in June 1999, the following document was released by the participating delegates:

Statement of Consensus

1. WE, athletes and advocates, affirm and support the Olympic ideals of peace, mutual understanding, friendship, solidarity and fair play as embodied in the Olympic Charter as a public trust.

2. WE, recognize the role and responsibility of the International Olympic Committee in organizing and managing the Olympic Movement and we challenge it to adhere to the Fundamental Principles embodied in the Olympic Charter.

3. WE, endorse and promote the following principles of ethical guardianship for the Olympic Movement:

  • Responsible Governance;           
  • Inclusive;          
  • Transparent;          
  • Accountable; and           
  • Democratic.

4. WE believe that the creation of an international and independent organization is necessary to restore, preserve and promote the Olympic ideals for present and future generations.
